Composition of the Atmosphere
In a given volume of dry air near the surface of the Earth, nitrogen occupies about 78% and oxygen about 21%. The composition of the atmopshere contains the following:
* Water is the only substance in our atmosphere that is found naturally as a liquid, as a gas, and as a solid.
* Carbon Dioxide, an important greenhouse gas in the Earth's atmosphere, has increased more than 20% since 1958.
* Other important greenhouse gases include: water vapor, methane, nitrous oxide, and chlorofluorocarbons.
* The majority of water on our planet is believed to have come from the Earth's hot interior through outgassing.
